EMAIL ADDRESS CONFIRM EMAIL ADDRESS The winner of the 2011 LUMIX Award spent a unique weekend in London and participated in a photography workshop with David Gibson. My name was written on a sign in big letters. It was the kind of sign you often see at airports around the world. The friendly man who was holding it in his hands was therefore able to add to my list of experiences right at the very start of my trip: I had always wanted to be welcomed at arrivals by someone with a sign like that at least once in my life. It somehow makes you feel very important. To add to this sensation, a sparkling black car was standing ready outside to chauffeur me into the city. Little did I know at the time what incredibly fascinating people I would meet here in London. It was the start of a completely unique weekend – my prize as the winner of the 2011 LUMIX Award.DAY 1: MORE THAN JUST PUDDLES – THE STREETS OF LONDON
To begin, I got to experience a little of the world-famous English weather. But that’s not all. Thanks to David Gibson, it was first and foremost an interesting and informative day – a day devoted to the topic of street photography. David is a quiet, intelligent photographer who told me and the others attending his seminar about the theory and history of street photography. However, he insisted that it was more important we should experience it for ourselves, which is why we were soon standing in the streets around Brick Lane. David, whose personality would fall somewhere between introspective and secretive, showed a typically British sense of humour on the day. He led us through the streets and was able to offer good answers to any questions that came his way. Our photo tour ended in an enormous market hall that was full of the rich aromas of food from around the world. There was plenty to discover in every corner.
After a cup of coffee and a little conversation, David and some of the group took their leave. I stayed for a while longer with two really nice people I got to know from the seminar, and we then headed off together.
DAY 2: ‘COME IN, MATE!’
Hoping that the person I am supposed to meet makes himself known, I was waiting outside a pub.
The door behind me opened and an eccentric guy appeared in the doorway. ‘Come in, mate!’ he called. I was immediately convinced that it was going to be a day to remember. We sat down and talked about how I got into photography, why I decided to take part in the LUMIX Award and whether I was happy with the prize weekend so far. Indeed I was, and unquestionably so once I had met Mimi Mollica more than words can describe. Mimi and I were on the same wavelength and hit it off at once. Two straightforward and direct guys who don’t mince words. At some point, we must have covered almost every aspect of day-to-day life – and soon the morning was over.
After a short break for lunch, we set off on a walk. Mimi explained how he likes to shoot pictures on the street: he walks very slowly and analyses every small detail before stopping in front of a scene. He is never satisfied to take just one photograph. You have to wait for the right moment, and nothing can be left to chance. We came to a rest at a street corner and treated ourselves to a beer. This area is one of the busiest in London for people who want to be seen. After just a few hours together, I already felt that Mimi was a good friend. It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to speak to someone about everything after knowing him for such little time. A shared passion for photography meant that we could speak a common language.
As a unique weekend came to an end, I was soon back at the airport, looking at the chaotic coming and going with fresh eyes. I had seen and learnt a great deal. But the most important thing was that I had been able to meet some fantastic and inspiring people. And fortunately there are such individuals all over the world.
